Pioneering band from Chile head to Birkenhead for powerful live show

Pioneers of Chilean afrobeat will perform in Birkenhead this August.

In collaboration with LUMA Creations, Newen Afrobeat will head to Future Yard on 7th August for what’s set to be an energetic and vibrant performance at the trailblazing Wirral venue.

The music of Newen Afrobeat channels the afrobeat style born in Nigeria in the late 60s, crafted by musical legends Fela Kuti and Tony Allen.

Bringing a unique sound that blends the rich cultural tapestries of Latin America and Africa, delivered through vibrant and energetic performances, Newen Afrobeat’s powerful lyrics, infused with social messages, resonate deeply with audiences.

Celebrating 15 years of dynamic performances, they’ve captivated audiences in the world music, jazz, and global Afrobeat scenes. Their electrifying appearances at prestigious events like Womad, Womex, Felabration Nigeria, and the Montreal Jazz Festival, and Liverpool’s own Africa Oyé, alongside performances in over 20 countries, have solidified their place as global music innovators.

With five studio albums under their belt, including their original music LPs and the iconic EP “Newen Plays Fela,” the Chilean band has previously delivered remarkable renditions of Fela Kuti’s classics, such as the widely acclaimed “Opposite People,” which boasts 14 million views as the most-watched Afrobeat video on YouTube.

This year the band have released their new album GRIETAS, which explores themes of rupture and transformation, life and death, and cultural interconnection, offering a provocative and diverse journey. The album transcends conventional Afrobeat, making it a must-listen for music lovers seeking something truly unique and transformative.

Support on the night comes from Liverpool-based jazz fusion band, Olvine.

Building on their previous EP release, the band have recently released their first album, All Yours Mate. Recorded live at Quarry in Liverpool, the record has managed to capture the essence of their live shows, with a sound described as  ‘jazz meets jungle, odd meters meet future soul, afrobeat meets drum & bass’.

Newen Afrobeat play Future Yard in Birkenhead on 7th August 2024 with doors at 7pm. Tickets are available now via TicketQuarter.
